Cheap Weekend Fun

The UMD Women’s Hockey team (uh … five-time national champs, by the way) takes on the Sioux (North Dakota) this weekend at Amsoil Arena. The game is in the afternoon to accommodate the men’s game (I think they have one Natty but you would think they had a dozen with all the hype) who are playing in the evening.

Tickets are $1 in advance from the UMD Ticket Office and $3 at the door on game day. Kids 10 and under get in free with an adult!

Here’s the actual promo text from the Athletic Department. Come on out to watch this game. Both team are very good and for all you girls hockey naysayers, I think you will be impressed by the speed and skill of the game.

Head to Amsoil Arena this weekend as the UMD Women’s Hockey Team takes on North Dakota at 3:07 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday afternoon. Saturday is “Fill the Seats at Amsoil Day,” so come out and cheer the Bulldogs on to victory! Tickets are only $1 if purchased in advance from the UMD Athletic Ticket Office and only $3 if purchased through Ticketmaster or at Amsoil Arena on gameday. All kids 10 & under will receive free admission!

Sunday afternoon is “Halloween at Amsoil”! Come dressed in your favorite costume and have a chance to win in the second intermission Halloween Costume Contest. Kids can trick-or-treat in the concourse before the game and all kids 10 & under are free with a paid adult!

  1. Also, if you are a UMD student, you get in free to EVERY Women’s hockey game at AMSOIL Arena. Just show your UCard at the ticket window and you’ll get your ticket! We had a great showing of students last Friday night against Wisconsin, and we would love to see that again (and at every game, for that matter!)

  2. Let’s stop using racist language like “Dirty Sioux” -- think about it.

  3. Erin. Thanks for the info!

Em- seriously good point. I used it in a hockey rivalry context without thinking about it at all. I’ll edit immediately. Thanks for calling it out.

  4. Thanks, mk! I’m a big hockey fan myself, so I totally get it -- but the times, they’re overdue for a changin’.

  5. “The North Dakota State Board of Higher Education announced on April 8, 2010, that the Fighting Sioux nickname would be retired after the 2010–2011 athletic season. The North Dakota State Board of Higher Education voted unanimously on Monday, May 10, to extend the deadline for the University of North Dakota to retire its nickname and logo to Aug. 15, 2011.

On March 11, 2011, the North Dakota Senate voted to approve legislation ordering the University of North Dakota to retain its controversial Fighting Sioux nickname and Indian-head logo. The vote was 28-15 with four senators absent and not voting. Governor Jack Dalrymple signed the Fighting Sioux bill into law the following week.” This legislation is expected to be repealed in November. [wikipedia | USA Today]

  6. Soooo… I’m guessing that em’s remark about racism was more about my poorly chosen descriptor and less about the choice of mascot for North Dakota. (Though my intention was in fun and describing the way I think they play hockey, I had not even CONSIDERED the alternative because I am a schmuck.)

Anyway- the mascot issue for them has been going on forever and a day. Regardless, there’s some great hockey at a great arena to be played this weekend. If you park in Canal Park and walk over, it could cost you less than your Burrito Union tab. Please come. You won’t be disappointed. Did I mention the UMD players are super nice people too? They are appreciative of support.

  7. On a related note, KUMD has recently started streaming women’s hockey games from our website starting about 15 minutes before the game. You can access those streams here.

These are separate from our normal streaming, so make sure you click on one of the Bulldog heads if you want to listen to the game.

  9. Is it $1 every weekend?

  10. Nobody shows up to watch the women play, even if the tickets are $1. It’s just like women’s basketball…slow and boring. Sorry, just the truth.
