PDD Calendar Launch on Monday, Sept. 12

Here’s the short version of things you need to know about the big changes at Perfect Duluth Day:

1) The PDD Calendar, which has been available in test mode for two months, will be launching full scale on Monday.

2) The editor of the calendar is Abigail Schoenecker, who can be reached at calendar @ perfectduluthday.com.

3) Effective immediately, PDD’s Blog Policies are changing a bit to discourage posting about events on the blog.

And now to go into greater detail regarding the above:

1) The PDD Calendar was created because more and more posts to the PDD Blog have been about events, but the format of a blog is not a practical way to organize that type of information for readers. The implementation of the calendar should make the blog more interesting while making your search for things to do in town a lot smoother.

2) Abigail Schoenecker is a recent University of Minnesota Duluth graduate with degrees in journalism and sociology. At UMD she was a reporter for Lake Voice and Statesman. She has also been a contributor to the Duluth Brews Tribune and the Homegrown Music Festival Field Guide. She is a Stillwater native, but we don’t tease her about that. Starting on Monday she’ll be posting weekly on the PDD Blog about upcoming local events to look forward to.

3) It’s still acceptable to post on the PDD Blog about event-related stuff; we’re just looking to eliminate the simple event announcements that now belong in the calendar. Read the policies for all the specifics on that. We fully expect it will take a long time for bloggers to adapt to this. So, in the future, please do not comment rudely when you see posts about events. When those posts show up it means either the moderators felt the content met with PDD’s policies or the moderators haven’t gotten around to removing the post yet.

If you’ve got questions, fire away in the comments. Here are answers to a couple questions folks are likely to have:

  • Yes, there will be an RSS feed for the calendar. Hopefully we’ll be able to share that on Monday. For now we’re still working out the kinks so it publishes items the way we want it to.
  • Yes, the calendar will be more comprehensive than it is now. The calendar editor just started entering events yesterday. Give her some time.
  • Yes, there are two good ways to submit an event to the calendar. Learn all about that on the Submit an Event page.

I'd hate to have to click on a different weblink for each category. Why separate one category from all the others, when it was easy to read them all together?

Chris, I'm not sure what you mean by "two different websites," but the calendar will exist in the same place it has throughout its beta test, at http://calendar.perfectduluthday.com/

If you mean why won't calendar events continue to be incorporated into the blog content, as Paul explained above, the new way will make the event listings easier to find (and therefore more useful) while helping to direct the blog content more toward interesting, discussion-worthy topics.

Change is difficult for some people, but we believe this move will make for a better website overall.

Also, welcome aboard, Abigail!

But we could always sort by category before. I could just look at all and only the "Creepy Stuff," or "Events" before with one extra click (links in the upper left). Basically, the "Events" are hidden now unless clicked, but "Creepy Stuff" is not. The event part of the blog has been separated from the other parts of the blog. The "For sale" category could just as well have been separated from the main blog too.

The blog will continue to be sorted by category as always.

The calendar will be one click away when we add that link on Monday, so it will be as easy to get to as clicking the events category on the blog. But those will be two separate things.

The calendar will include more events than the blog ever did, and those events will be organized so if you want to know what's happening today, tomorrow, or any day in the future, you can find it without sifting through a random collection of posts that list the dates in different places in the body of each post.

We're not "hiding" the events category in the blog. It will function the same as always, but the posts that are simple announcements about events are being eliminated because the calendar will take care of that and allow the information to be sorted so you can see not only what is happening on any given day, but what is happening at any given venue in the coming weeks or look exclusively at what music, sports or other type of events are happening.

One of the problems people have had with posting events to the blog in the past is they always wondered when to publish the post. There was a sense that posting about an event the week before it happened meant it would fall off the home page and people would forget about it by the time it happened. But when people posted about an event within a day or two of it happening, commenters would complain they didn't get enough notice to plan for the event.

This solves that problem by allowing people to share event information far in advance and still have it highlighted on the day it happens.

Could you add some features to make it easier to scan events over a weekend? "Previous Day" and "Next Day" buttons at the bottom would mean I wouldn't have to scroll back to the top to manually enter a different date in the search field.

Also, "From" and "To" would be a nice feature (if I wanted query a week's events and look at them all on one long page).

And did I mention "thanks for all the work you're putting into this"? It's awesome that someone cares about our community enough to spend their time (and money) promoting it.

You might not have noticed that the navigation bar across the top has all the days of the current week, so you don't need to manually enter a date unless you want to know what's happening beyond seven days into the future. Just click "Sunday" to find out what's happening on Sunday.

Thanks, Barrett and everybody else! I'm working hard to be ready for the launch and will start posting weekly on Monday about big and interesting events going on in the area.

It would be awesome if this was a public .ical or some other standard format calendar, so, for instance, it could be imported into my google calendar. Is that possible?

Freddie

So where will the calendar be?

Paul Lundgren

perfectduluthday.com/calendar

I don't think there's any way to import it into your Google calendar, but the RSS feed seems to be working now, so try it out in your Google Reader.

Freddie, there's a new link on the top of the left column - Events Calendar.
