Two Arrowhead Regional Arts Council news releases below.

The Arrowhead Regional Arts Council at its March 17, 2011, meeting approved grant applications totaling $13,500 to be awarded in Small Capital Grants. The funding for these grants is made available by the Minnesota Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund as appropriated by the Minnesota State Legislature with money from the vote of the people of Minnesota on November 4, 2008.

Small Capital Grants Awarded

Anthony Bennett – Duluth ($999) Anthony Bennett will use this grant to purchase a new laptop computer for music recording purposes.

Andrew Turpening – Duluth ($1,265) Andrew Turpening will use this grant to purchase a high-quality electronic keyboard with case and to update piano, bass and drum set software that the keyboard will control.

Sacred Heart Music Center – Duluth ($1,500) Sacred Heart Music Center will use this grant to purchase sound absorbing curtains for its performance space.

Grand Marais Playhouse – Grand Marais ($1,500) Grand Marais Playhouse will use this grant to purchase one wireless microphone and four in-ear monitors to better assist community performers participating in musicals and allow for increased sound quality for the audience.

Mesabi Community Orchestra – Virginia ($1,500) Mesabi Community Orchestra will use this grant to purchase small percussion equipment so they no longer need to borrow equipment for rehearsal and performance.

Laurentian Arts and Culture Alliance – ($976) Laurentian Arts and Culture Alliance will use this grant to replace the business computer and software required to maintain donor records, update their web site and produce posters, programs and other documents.

Ely Greenstone Public Art – Ely ($1,500) Ely Greenstone Public Art will use this grant to purchase a laptop computer that will improve their documentation and efficiency.

Crescendo Youth Orchestra – Hibbing ($1,260) Crescendo Youth Orchestra will use this grant to purchase a laptop computer for music writing and arranging.

Renegade Theater Company – Duluth ($1,500) Renegade Theater Company will use this grant to purchase a keyboard for use in their twice yearly musical productions.

Jaques Art Center – Aitkin ($1,500)Jaques Art Center will use this grant to purchase updated telephone equipment in order to make communication between the upper and lower level of the Jaques Art Center building less dangerous for the staff and volunteers.

The funding for these grants is made available by the Minnesota Arts and Cultural Heritage fund as appropriated by the Minnesota State Legislature with money from the vote of the people of Minnesota on November 4, 2008. The arts organizations funded are as follows:

Two-Year Administrative Support Grants Awarded

Edge of the Wilderness Community Center – Bigfork ($10,000) Edge of the Wilderness Community Center will use this grant to hire an employee to work 15 hours per week on administrative duties.

Lake Superior Chamber Orchestra – Duluth ($9,989) Lake Superior Chamber Orchestra will use this grant to stabilize and support the position of its part-time General Manager through a salary increase.

Three Bridges International Chamber Music Festival – Duluth ($10,000) Three Bridges International Chamber Music Festival will use this grant to bring world class music faculty to Duluth to coach outstanding, pre-professional music students to prepare for and present chamber music concerts to the community and to present master classes, music lessons and pedagogy seminars for area music students and teachers.

Lake Superior Youth Chorus, Inc. – Duluth ($10,000) Lake Superior Youth Chorus will use this grant to work to achieve the goals in the current strategic plan, particularly in the marketing and fundraising areas.

Ely Winter Festival – Ely ($10,000) Ely Winter Festival will use this grant to rent office space and equip it for meetings, storage, and office use; and will pay its treasurer on a contract basis.

Jaques Art Center – Aitkin ($10,000) Jaques Art Center will use this grant to increase hours for the Office Manager and pay utility and building insurance fees.

County Seat Theater Company – Cloquet ($10,000) County Seat Theater Company will use this grant to pay 2011 and 2012 propane and electric bills and raise the part-time salary of the current General Manager.

Mesabi Community Orchestra – Virginia ($10,000) Mesabi Community Orchestra will use this grant to hire a development director and work with a consultant to design and implement a sustainable fundraising program that will include business and individual contributions, ad sales and consideration of a fundraising event.

Laurentian Arts and Culture Alliance – Virginia ($10,000) Laurentian Arts and Culture Alliance will use this grant to hire a consultant to facilitate board development and hire a part-time clerical staff person.

The funding for these grants is made available by the Minnesota Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund as appropriated by the Minnesota State Legislature with money from the vote of the people of Minnesota on November 4, 2008, and an appropriation from the Minnesota State Legislature. The arts organizations funded are as follows:
 
Rural and Community Art Grants Awarded
 
Aitkin County Friends of the Arts - Aitkin ($2,000) Aitkin County Friends of the Arts will use this grant to produce and stage the play "Forever Plaid" at the Aitkin All School Reunion event in June, 2011.
 
Mallard Island - International Falls ($2,000) Mallard Island will use this grant to produce a one-week Native wooden flute workshop to be held July 31 to August 6, 2011.
 
Nemadji Arts Guild - Moose Lake ($2,000) Nemadji Arts Guild will use this grant to produce a series of five concerts to be held in the Moose Lake City Park Bandshell, in an effort to draw people to the park during the summer with professional quality music.
 
Neighborhood Housing Services of Duluth - Duluth ($4,000) Neighborhood Housing Services of Duluth will use this grant to assist in the commission of local artists to create a series of public art installations along the proposed arts corridor of Fourth Street through Central Hillside in Duluth.
 
North Shore Music Association - Grand Marais ($4,000) North Shore Music Association will use this grant to present blues singer Shemekia Copeland on Saturday, June 11, 2011, at the Arrowhead Center for the Arts in Grand Marais.
 
Aitkin Community Education - Aitkin ($2,500) Aitkin Community Education will use this grant to sponsor Prairie Fire Theatre to work with local children and youth in producing a live theater experience and public performance.
 
Art Center - Two Harbors ($3,222) The Art Center will use this grant to produce four workshops for children coinciding with train arrivals, three adult workshops and a community exhibit with Art Center members and community artists.
 
Itasca Choral Society - Grand Rapids ($4,000) The Itasca Choral Society will use this grant to facilitate a Community Sing of the Messiah by collaborating with regional school and church choirs and accompanied by orchestra on December 11, 2011, at the Greenway Auditorium in Coleraine, MN.
 
Magic Smelt Puppet Troupe - Duluth ($4,000) The Magic Smelt Puppet Troupe will use this grant to produce three sets of free public workshops in the art of outdoor parade spectacle including stilt walking, papier mache sculpture and costuming for parades.
 
North Shore Music Association - Grand Marais ($3,222) The North Shore Music Association will use this grant to present a concert by guitarist and songwriter Leo Kottke at the Arrowhead Center for the Arts in Grand Marais.
 
Icebox Radio Theater - International Falls ($3,055) The Icebox Radio Theater will use this grant to produce a series of live musical variety radio shows each in a different Koochiching County community and each broadcast live over the internet.
 
Rainy Lake Community Orchestra - International Falls ($4,000) The Rainy Lake Community Orchestra will use this grant to produce a week long workshop for string players from the region with guest artists from Minnesota, Chicago, Winnipeg and other Ontario cities.
