Things to do in Duluth

I always look at the Transistor for things to do on any given week, but sometimes it can be inconvenient to have to wait for the new issue.  I have family visiting next week, and it would be nice to see what’s going on in town.  Is there anything that is anywhere near as comprehensive and as focused on the arts as the Transistor that covers a longer period of time?

PS: Your book (The Spowl Ribbon) was great! It had a tone similar to David Sedaris without the neurosis. You're a smarty pants, especially in your sweatpants. Actually, I'm reading Kurt Vonnegut's final book, which is short stories and ruminations on life, and it has a similar tone to that, too.

Glad you like the book, Ethan. Sedaris and Vonnegut are indeed inspirations, but so are newspaper articles about flag-stealing squirrels and Frisbee-sharing axe shoppers.

Man! I was just standing around doing nothing, and you interrupted me. Bummer. Now I feel like a weirdo.

If your family members like independent film and can't get it where they live, check out the Zinema 2's website/calendar. Next week 'Tree of Life' opens, and Herzog's 'Cave of Forgotten Dreams' and Woody Allen's new film also are playing. Possibly 'Meek's Cutoff' too? All extremely well reviewed films. If the calendar isn't updated for any given future week, Tim at the Zinema is really good about responding to email questions.

What's going on in town? Not really anything, by normal town standards. The art fair is cool.

I suggest taking them for a nice hike.

I wish the Transistor would add an RSS feed to their site! I never check it out because I don't remember to look there.
VisitDuluth.com is designed for tourists, but still has a lot of useful information on what's going on for locals.
TwinPortsNightlife.com has lots of info on, well, nightlife in the twin ports...
Duluth Newss Tribune also posts local events (not thorough or easy to navigate though).

We take everyone visiting us from elsewhere several places:

1. Cruise on the Vista King or Queen
2. Gooseberry Falls
3. Depot

4.) Superior Hiking Trail. the Split Rock River loop @ milepost 49 (just north of Gooseberry, just before you get to Split Rock S.P.) is a good beginner day hike. roughly 6 miles out and back. hiking time would be about 3-4 hours, sans time out for lunch.

start early with a cup of Alakef from the Amazing Grace and finish the day off with a slice of pie @ the Rustic just south of Gooseberry, and you're golden!

Another great SHT hike is the loop around Bear and Bean Lakes outside Silver Bay. 6-7 miles, 3-4 hours incl lunch time. Amazing cliff-top views of Bear Lake. Did this loop for the first time last summer--wow.

+1 for maria's bean/bear lake loop...the first night of my first outing last spring (the first weekend of April, to be exact) was spent on Bear Lake. Night #2 was spent on Kennedy Creek inside the Wolf Ridge ELC. (also another spectacular hike.)

if you're going to hit that loop, you'll want to park at the Silver Bay tourist info center. much easier access, and a little shorter hike time than from down the road. point to point, it's a decent hike to Mt Trudee and eventually Tetegouche SP. Two vehicles will allow you to do a point to point hike.

Update: The Chester Creek Concert featuring Fishheads has been canceled due to the weather. It's been rescheduled for Aug. 16.
