Somebody tell them to turn down their music at Leif Erickson and/or Bayfront Park. I live above Skyline and it’s been driving me insane. And while they’re at it, get off my lawn.
I know Chester Creek runs UNDER the armory. Why is water running out of this pipe? Is there a stream of water the third floor too? What is the source of this water?

I’m looking for a Duluth-area photographer that wants to go to the Dominican Republic around February 2012. I’m gettin’ hitched down there and need someone who’s willing to eat and drink all they want for a few days and snap some photos of my family, friends, myself and my beautiful wife-to-be. The only qualifications you need are to have experience in professional photography and to know how to keep up with some fun people that want to get down in paradise. Comment to leave info to set up a meeting i.e. phone number, e-mail, website to your portfolio.
Hey folks, we are playing a last minute gig at R.T. Quinlan’s this Friday night with some neat Twin Cities bands. Aaron Gall and the Likely Story (hopefully the official permanent name) will be headlining the gig with a full lineup including washboard, sax, trombone, accordion and more!
Come check out the hype before we finish up New Band Night on Sunday, May 1, for Homegrown!

The BBC Orinoco slipped out of Duluth this morning at first light. Was the Ukrainian/Filipino crew concerned about ANOTHER pirate attack? Turns out the same boat and crew were attacked just six months ago on the Arabian Sea.

By popular demand, we chose Big Daddy’s Burgers as the next location in our “Breakfast in Duluth” series. Because it’s located next to Arthur’s Formal Wear in the Piedmont Plaza, we considered renting tuxedos so we’d look good while scarfing down our omelets, but unfortunately that wasn’t in the budget, so we kept our regular clothes on and, as usual, looked like a couple of fools. DULUTH–Poor Kristen Jacobs. She’s not just marrying a local singer. She’s marrying us all.
Once upon a time, Duluth citizens gazed upon their rock musicians from afar. Not any more.
Members of the band Sexhawk are now Hollywood-style mega-celebrities — their cellulite, receding hairlines and boozy nights out subject to the same relentless scrutiny as other A-listers.
(Story continued on page 4A with details about what kind of cake will be served at Hot Rod’s wedding. Look below the fold for a chart with important details like what time it will be in Abu Dhabi or Hong Kong when Hot Rod’s parents arrive at Sacred Heart.)
Damage Boardshop over on 1904 W. Superior St. submitted a quick shop edit to Transworld Snowboarding‘s website for its Neff: East vs. West shop video contest. For all of you metal fans they used a song by Class of ’86 and edited without all the foreplay, getting straight to the point and making it last a little over 2 minutes (which is totally normal for most of those guys.)
Everyone can vote one time (tracked by I.P.) so if you really like it and you’re at work go make your rounds on all the desktops! If you don’t like it STFU and make your own last-minute edit.
I also heard a rumor if you vote and run into the owner at any local establishment that serves alcohol (e.g. Carmody, Lucé, Black Woods) he’ll buy you a shot of Patron.
Michael D. Linn, UMD Linguistics professor and friend, celebrated his retirement this week. Linn is most famous, perhaps, for work in the Linguistic Atlas of our region. Mike is the reason that we know that the unique mix of ethnic communities in the Range produced more than 30 identifiable dialects. Maybe equally importantly, he explained (to me, at least) the ways that labor in the mines was fragmented and weakened when work groups were mixed together of people who did not speak the same language. No common language, no ability to organize unions. [Today, it seems, we are separated by a common language that keeps us from organizing. That's my opinion, not Mike's.]
Mike taught intro linguistics, topics in linguistics, and applied linguistics for teachers. I’m sure many teachers in Duluth learned their trade from Mike. He also taught writing. If you have any memories of Mike you’d like to share, comment below.
More info about Mike, including some indication of how he will spend retirement, can be found here

Wanna feed the hungry, eat spaghetti and listen to a bunch of “comics” rip apart an ‘ol lesbo, then reel in horror as we give Carolyn an open mic to retort?

It’s that time of year again, the time when we magically change the secret folder that makes random silly pictures appear at the top of the PDD page. We’re looking for your Homegrown photos! So follow the same guidelines for submitting photos, but send us Homegrown-related images. You know, people drinking beer, playing rawknroll, hanging out, scans of your long-form birth certificate, and so on. We’ll rotate homegrown images during next week’s festivities.
The first paragraph of the story below (from 109 years ago today — April 27, 1902, Duluth News Tribune) might as well be about the Homegrown Music Festival, which represents itself with the chicken logo at left.
It is said that when the chicken raising microbe once enters the human system there is no known remedy — the victim must succumb to the inevitable. With some it is a fad and with others it is both business and pleasure but those belonging to the latter class are by far the more numerous.
This article also connects to the subject of creating a locally harvested food system, which pops up often on Perfect Duluth Day (most recently with the post “Food from Scratch for the Zenith of the Unsalted Sea”) so I’ll present it in its entirety.
Since the old newspaper article is difficult to read in this format, PDD will give away a weeklong pass to Homegrown to the first person willing to typeset it with reasonable accuracy and paste the full text in a comment to this post.
I really like the orchard thing. I’ve always said the food folks were ahead of the game in Duluth They understand a basic truth. I don’t like typing here. I want the box back.
