Here’s what they were doing Sunday off Stony Point, just south of Knife River. 50 mph wind gusts, 21 degrees.
One of many reasons to love Minnesota and Minnesotans!
That’s so cool! Major props!
Randy Carlson and these guys are a great example of “the will of the wave.” Love their stoke!
They kind of look like surfing ninjas.
But they don’t look like the kind of surfing ninjas that would be long-lost princes from a China Sea Island who inherited magically-induced martial arts prowess.
Actually, surf culture on Lake Superior is quite strong.
Lake Superior surfers have their own website and a very active discussion group.
And read a New York Times article about it here:
Hanging 10 (Degrees) on Icy Lake Superior
Or a local article here:
North Shore Surfers
I can’t believe that people weren’t more excited about this film, which climaxes on Stony Point in a gale.
Here’s a longer but lower res excerpt from the same movie which is called Unsalted, I forgot to mention. It’s by Michigan native Vince Deur, he did the midwest premiere here in Duluth in 2005
