Looking for Hobby Wood Species

So I’ve got a couple of winter projects that I’d like to begin tackling soon. I’m looking to build an entertainment center and a hutch. I’ve been to Home Depot and Menard’s, and the only species I’ve found for hobby projects are pine and red oak. This leads me to a couple questions.

1. Where can I find a variety of wood species at a reasonable price?

2. I’ve considered using cherry for these projects (I haven’t found any…) mainly because I’ve seen it used in other projects and have liked the grain. Does anybody have experience with cherry? Would you recommend it or would you recommend another species for said projects?

Lakeside Lumber doesn't carry any hardwood anymore. I've heard that Woodruff Lumber on Garfield Ave would have a selection. I've spent many hours in both the Menards and Home Depot lumber aisles. The selection isn't great, but they do have a few choices. I usually use oak. I know they have maple, but I don't recall ever seeing cherry anywhere.

I've used Woodruff Lumber on a few occasions and I can't say anything bad about them. Selection is decent. If you don't mind driving, there are several specialty yards around Minneapolis that I HIGHLY recommend - amazing selection, fair prices. Usually, I'll suck up the gas money and make a trip to load up on a good stock. Best of luck finding!

Try Lumber Liquidators on Garfield Ave or H & H Lumber in Superior. A friend uses their wood exclusively and he's a master carpetner. Good luck with your projects!

There is a guy on Rice Lake with three buildings full of walnut, cherry, basswood, white oak, cedar and much much more. You will not believe the quality and selection. All furniture grade, long lengths for canoes etc. I forgot his name, but his son runs the saw mill out that way on Rice Lake Road. He used to advertise solely in the DNT classified sections.
