Upset Duluth: In case you missed it
By akjuneau on Sep 15, 2010 in Photos
It took a few days to pull together, and the link was kind of buried in the Upset Duluth thread, but in response to demand a gallery of portraits has been started over at the News Tribune Attic. It includes the 1995 photo above, by the News Tribune’s Bob King, of a Superior resident concerned about the condition of the sidewalk near his home. There are photos of people without concerns, too.
I’ll keep adding to it if there’s reader interest in seeing more.

It’s like the sidewalk cracked because that guy is so awesome.
If ever body language said “what the fuck is this about”…. this guy is beaming it to my third eye!
Awesome in at least 17 ways.
Let us count:
1. It’s 1995 in Superior
2. It’s clearly summer (in 1995 in Superior)
3. The shoes
4. The pants
5. The shirt
6. The glasses
7. The hat
8. That he looks to be about 5’4″
9. The little white “picket” fence (That’ll keep the riff-raff out!)
10. That he’s so concerned about the condition of the sidewalk (In 1995, what else did we have to be concerned about? The price of gas? I think not. Iran? Well, maybe. Palin? Oh God, no. Times change, always.)
11. ?
12. ?
13. ?
14. ?
15. ?
16. ?
17. ?
Help me out here…
Profit!
I want him to sound like Joe Pesci.
#11. The sidewalk only crumbles in front of his house.
What’s he got buried under there?
I’m walkin’ here, I’m walkin here!!
Nobody uses the sidewalks in my neighborhood, they all walk in the middle of the street like they own it. And I’m not so sure they have paid much in taxes in the past few years, not unlike myself.
#12: What, are you talkin’ to me? You talkin’ to me?? Wait … you want some of this? You’re lookin’ at a big ol’ can o’ whoopass, sonny and believe me, you do not wanna shake it up!
The hat only counts if is says something like: “Sex is a misdemeanor. De more I miss, de meaner I get.”
Oh wow, blast from the past! That light brown house in the background is my childhood home and I used to ride my Huffy on that sidewalk. We left Superior in 1993 so I missed the controversy. I suppose I should remember this guy since he apparently lived 2 doors down but I don’t.
Mr. William Gambeski -- WWII veteran, passed away last year. RIP!
The best thread ever, and even more so because of how it’s connected to Nate, his brown house, Nate’s dad, and Mr. Gambeski.
And for quote of the year, I hand it to Paul:
“It’s like the sidewalk cracked because that guy is so awesome.”
What a fabulous thing to say…I love it.
LOL!! This pic is SO going up on my fridge at home (right next to the gaggle of ladies from the DNT parking story). Furthermore, this guy is an icon for grandpas of the 90′s everywhere, come on, you KNOW your grandpa dressed just like this. My paternal one sure did!
Also, I too think Paul’s comment is right on (though “Yes!” yours is a close second!)
Disgruntled Duluth! That’s what this needs to be called! Except it should only have pissed off Duluthians… The other posed photos are okay (I especially like the Dad with his kids), but nothing puts a smile on my face more than a raging Duluth citizen. It must include these pics for sure, in order of importance:
1.) The group of Denfeld women, for sure!
2.) This guy (classic)
3.) The angry woman in her living room
4.) The one with Kathy Meyer standing in the cold
5.) The mystery photo from 1955
6.) The Zion church guy
7 & 8.) The pictures of Gary Nordstrom and the one with Scott Kuiti
9.) The one with Rose Mathews… though, she looks more sad than disgrunted, so I don’t know.
It’s coming along, though. Great idea Paul!
You know those cartoons at the back of the New Yorker where they have a contest for captions? We could do that. Two captions so far for this one..
“I’m walkin’ here, I’m walkin’ here” by Yes!
“It’s like the sidewalk cracked because that guy is so awesome.” by Paul.
It would be fun to have a caption contest on PDD for some of these very unique photos we have been seeing. The Mystery Woman is the one that intrigues me most.
We did do a few captioning exercises on PDD a few years ago. Here’s two in particular that I remember:
Caption This
Caption These
Unfortunately, those posts are both from PDD’s original publishing platform, Blogger, which didn’t support comments. (There were comments back then, but they were supported through some company that went out of business, so the wacky comments from 2003 to 2005 are gone now. Ah, the old days.)
Some of the photo captions remain, however, on Barrett’s “Caption This” album on Flickr.
