Dirty Rotten Scoundrels

This may be a long shot, but I am hoping PDDers can help. Last night I had two wicker chairs stolen off my front porch by Eighth Ave. E. and Seventh St. Normally, I wouldn’t mind, but these chairs were my great grandmother’s, so they have some sentimental value to me.

They are a darker green with green- and white-striped cushions (although one of the cushions I found in the neighbor’s yard, so one is missing). One is a rocking chair and the other looks the same, but it’s just a regular chair.

I can’t imagine people carrying them around too far, as they are kind of heavy, unless they took them away in a car. I have scoped out the neighborhood, but have not found any sign of them. I’m hoping they weren’t ditched on the side of a street and someone else picked them up thinking they were free for the taking.

If you could keep your eyes out for them, I would greatly appreciate it. If you are the dirty rotten scoundrels that took them, please put them back where you found them. I just don’t understand why people do this type of thing — it really irks me. Thanks for your help!

  1. I live in the 15th east neighborhood and there is a scrawny, long-dark-haired-older woman that I am guessing stole one of my hanging plants. She seems to be a dumpster diver as I caught her going through ours and she will occasionally will walk by my house with some treasures she probably picked up. She came right up to my window one day to grab a rake that was resting against the house. I’m not saying it’s her but I will keep my eye out to see if the chairs pop up on anyone’s porch in my neighborhood.

  2. That sucks! I hope they just wandered off to attend some party and will be back with tales of adventure but no worse off.

  3. Don’t you hate that?!? And nice old wicker is hard to find. This happened in my neighborhood and the deck furniture was found in a nearby wooded area where “kids” had had a fire and were smoking and drinking — kid stuff. You might check any vacant lots/kid hang out if you know them. Too bad. So sad.

  4. Thank you all for the look out. I really appreciate the advice. I will keep looking and keep my fingers crossed that I find them.

  5. We keep our lawn and patio furniture chained up. You might want to consider that when you do find them. It doesn’t look that nice, but it stops the thieves.

  6. I live in roughly your neck of the woods and as a walker gal I’ll definitely keep my eyes open. Posting to PDD was a great idea -- you may recover your chairs, but at the very least you get some deserved sympathy.

  7. I’ve seen patio furniture secured with a small cable. It wouldn’t stop someone with a bolt-cutter, but it’s enough to deter casual theives without looking like the front porch on the police state.

  8. There’s a wicker rocking chair at Goodwill on Garfield Ave. I thought of you when I saw it; maybe it’s yours?

  9. Was it a green rocker at the Goodwill?

  10. I live out west, but it doesn’t mean they couldn’t have traveled in my neck of the woods. I will keep my eyes open also when I am walking. I am sorry that a really sucks … to bad it wasn’t the cheap Kmart wicker chairs and not the cool old stuff.
