G.B. Schneider & Co. open in West Duluth

G.B. Schneider Co. opened on Tuesday in the Denfeld Retail Center. It’s in the space formerly occupied by Grandma’s Grand Ave. Cafe. The focus is on comfort foods: ravioli, pot roast, meatloaf, etc.

Here’s the full menu:

  1. Looks like a fun and delicious menu, with the added bonus of Happy Hour! I will definitely check it out.

  2. I will be going to check out that Monte Cristo… it’s a sandwich that’s hard to find on a menu!

  3. My parents got take-out from them last night apparently, and called me immediately to rave about the quality and suggest we go soon. Very fresh and tasty, and mom’s a picky one!

  4. Gary is the former Club Mgr. at Northland Country Club. Looking at the names of the dishes on the menu, my guess is that his cousin, Howard Klatzky, is involved in this endeavor as well. His wife & kids all have items bearing their names.

Gary is a heck of a chef so I will def give this a try!

  5. We were a little disappointed in the service. Food was good. We’ll try it again when things slow down.

  6. We went this weekend and we weren’t impressed with it. I am sorry to say that. It is very low key and our server spoke so soft we had to have her repeat everything because we just didn’t know what she was saying. I wish them the best, but I miss Grandma’s half-price drinks and half price appetizers during happy hours. I will try them again though to give them another chance.

  7. Just had lunch there -- we loved it. The lunch was amazing! I had the grill cheese w/ tomato soup and the hubby had the Monte Cristo. Both SO good. I cannot wait to try other things on that menu.

Being not even a week old and a lot of them brand new to the ‘service world’, we think the staff did a great job. Much better from some of the times I had been out there when it was Grandma’s. I was never impressed by that staff once in all the years it was open.

The changes that they did to the restuarant were wonderful, I loved that they kept Big Buck Hunter and opened up the walls.

We will be going back… and soon. I want more soup!

PS~ Rumor is the happy hour starts today and its on both the bar and the dining side- so no need to squeeze into the bar side only if you want to enjoy the deals.

  8. I went on Saturday after the Park Point Rummage Sales. There were about 2 servers per table when we got there, then there was a sudden influx of people and our server forgot all about us. My folks liked their meals just fine, I suppose. My mom said that she would have liked the egg on her “Breakfast Burger” to have been over-easy, rather than over-hard. My chicken sandwich was rather boring. I’m not in a huge hurry to return.

  9. I had the pork meatball sliders and were they ever delish.,with a delicate pork flavor, perfect seasoning, juicy teriyaki sauce, pineapple on homeade mini buns. I loved them…Perfect serving size of 3 sliders. My fiance’ had the Howies favorite burger and handcut fries and mmmmmnnnn’d with every bite, needless to say he enjoyed it.

  10. I agree with Patricia in some ways in the service. We found that their happy hour is a pull tab system. You order a drink at happy hour and you pull a tab to see if you get full price, half price, and a dollar off. We asked for ketchup and after we were half done with our fries she came with ketchup … in those little packets like McDonalds. Had to ask three times for napkins and silverware.

  11. Thank you all for the great comments. I want to address this to the folks that came but did not have a great experience. Please give us another chance. We have improved leaps and bounds and would love to show you. Let me know personally when you are here. I thank you all for your patronage and look forward to seeing you here again.

  12. Wow. It’s about time. There is nowhere else like this around here. What a reuben! Can’t wait to come back.

  13. Had lunch on 6/21 w/ wife. My Howie’s burger was good, though a bit thin for 1/3 pound. Wife loved her reuben…nicely sliced (not too thick) and very flavorful. Portions were fine and prices pretty reasonable for lunch (i.e. pretty much the same as Grandma’s). Two sandwiches & one diet coke ~$25 w/ tip. We’ll put it on the monthly rotation.

  14. Where are the hours listed for the restaurant? I can’t find them anywhere. You need to post them on your website so people have a clue to when you’re open.

  15. Pull tab Happy Hour will drive customers away. Does not match the previous Grandmas customer service, happy hour specials, and it has no late night happy hour. Food is good.

  16. Just an FYI on HOURS and HAPPY HOUR: my understanding is that hours are 11 am to 8-ish for lunch and dinner; with the bar open until 10-11 pm (or possibly later, if you bring a cadre of folks to keep it open?) On that note, I’m also told that Happy Hour (4-6 pm weekdays) is indeed HALF-PRICE taps, house wines and well drinks (they pulled the plug on pull tabs). Plus, “Happetizers” for $3.95 … Hope that helps.

  17. Out for a quick bite to eat and were pleasantly surprised with the wonderful food and great service. We enjoyed the meatloaf, panini and clam chowder soup (nice with a hint of fire). My son LOVED the PB and Banana waffle w/maple syrup. The server was willing to put in my son’s order right away (he was starving!). We shared the bar tray, which was filled with brownies, blondies and, our favorite, Scotcheroos. The artwork from the Duluth Crate Company — block prints of Duluth scenes, was fun to look at. Next time we’re in town, we’ll definitely go back.
