I went to Adams School in 1935 and 1936, before my family moved to Brainerd. In third grade I was captain of the school patrol and was included in a trip to Lum Park in Brainerd as a part of a large group of patrollers. Imagine their envy when I didn't have to take the bus back to Duluth.

I remember Mr. House the principal and Mrs. Guthrie the third grade teacher. What a great school it was. I remember that I had great affection for Maryann Divitis -- she was a doll and there was also a beautiful but distant Janet Jepson. I remember noisy dusty mob soccer in the play yard. What fun.

Paul: great post. I am currently at work on a book to be titled "Lost Duluth" about the buildings and landmarks that have come and gone; we've cataloged over 225 subjects so far. The Adams school was one of many, many beautiful schools Duluth built throughout the years, quite a few of of which survive.

But what I can't seem to find is a good pic of the original Portland School, which went down to make room for the second Portland School, whose name was changed to Jefferson, now the jefferson apartments. If anyone out there has an idea where I could find one, please let me know!

Same deal with Longfellow School in West Duluth. An old stairway and sidewalk leads to an expanse of open land near Elim Lutheran Church.

I have wondered about the numerous overgrown stairways going up the hill in the 1700 block of W. Superior. Now I see they must have led to the Adams School.
