Leftovers

Leftovers348572I visited my parents yesterday and my mother told me she had a gift for me. She produced a bottle of sloe gin and a bottle of grenadine, the contents of which had both been partially consumed.

The two bottles have been in my parents coat closet for many years. The theory is that they were leftover from my brother’s wedding reception in 1985.

I’m pretty sure the grenadine should go straight down the sink, although I’m kind of wondering if corn sweetner and citric acid blended with various preservatives tastes any different after two-and-a-half decades.

The sloe gin, on the other hand, needs to be consumed and enjoyed in excess. Does anyone out there have a parent with some vermouth in the closet? We should get together for cocktails.

And by the way, what’s your favorite sloe gin drink?

  1. The only thing in the closet in my family is my uncle … my 87 y/o mother did the same thing with my father’s stash a few years ago. Time only makes booze better.

  2. When anyone says “sloe gin fizz,” I am immediately transported to the ’70s and the Brass Phoenix lounge!

Bailey’s Irish Creme, on the other hand, does NOT keep for 15 years in a cabinet, though the memory of the boyfriend who left it there won’t die.

  4. Once at the Kom-On-Inn the owner broke out some
bourbon with tax stamps from 1952 (Old Taylor)
It was amazing, sadly she seemed to be using most of it to make whiskey cokes and such.

Have you ever had a “slow comfortable screw up against the wall”?

  5. Parent with vermouth!?! You are now officially required and invited to a T57 weekly musical fellowship. We sit, enjoying each others fine company, quaffing snifters of sloe gin mixology.

  6. Gaa! Throw it all away.

Though I should love sloe gin, I had a massive teen bender on it, and I still can’t go near it. Same with Peppermint schnapps.

It’s too old, though. Pitch it.

  7. We went through a phase of Sloe Gin mixed with Minute Maid Orange Soda. We worked at Subway at the time, so it was free. One night we were partying, and one guy in in particular got really bad. He was drinking Bud Dry and Sloe Gin mixed together in his Subway Comeback Cup. Later that night he urinated in my parents fridge.

  8. Chris, you should submit that comment to a poetry magazine.

  9. By the way, Paul, I think the label on that grenadine bottle corroborates your 1985 theory.
