“Pawlenty should do a Sarah Palin and Step Down”

“Pawlenty should do a Sarah Palin and Step Down” that was something my friend Scott Yeazle said, speaking at a rally at city hall today. The rally was in opposition to the governor’s unallotment decisions. I’m not gonna try to be a real reporter or anything, I tried that years ago and was terrible at it, too much ego and opinion, too little filter.

And I wasn’t even there to protest. I stopped by as part of my regular duties as a (non-partisan) non-profit employee trying to get a few more low income, unemployed and struggling people in the seats at this free workshop on Thursday. (Everyone is welcome, actually, but we really want people who are very broke to benefit from it and it’s almost full.)

I learned a few things there, too, and got to hear some interesting perspectives on poverty, government and taxes. One lady (forget her name) said that the governor “unallotted” the “renter’s rebate” program for low to moderate renters starting in 2010. I didn’t write down any of what Scott or anyone said, so I may have that a bit wrong, but I got the spirit of it, he thinks that Pawlenty is running for national office and should step down so someone who wants to focus on the people of MN can be governor. Roger Reinert said that the DFL proposal may have raised taxes on the “wealthiest” Minnesotans but the counties are going to have to raise their taxes much more after the unallotment, so the governor wasn’t even acting in their best interests with his strong “no new taxes” position. I don’t understand all of the issues, and I’m not sure if all of this is true or not, but I thought it would be ok if I shared some of this stuff here, especially since I didn’t see any media there beside the Hillsider newspaper, and WDIO-DTV, and maybe PACT TV.

  1. Yeah, no new taxes…just exorbitant fees on every little service the state offers. Take for example the citation I received for not using my blinker. I admit, I was at fault. I did the crime and I’m willing to do the time…the $35 fine was reasonable in my book. But what about the $85 “service fee” on top of that?? What do you call that? I call it price gouging. What am I supposed to do…go to a competitor for a better price?? He’s a sneaky, corporate spinster that Pawlenty is.

  2. This is such a clever way to disguise an ad for the workshop. Kudos, wildgoose.

  4. Well there is free lunch if you look. We protested on the fact that the governor’s cuts will make people suffer. The people who need the help like the seniors. I do like the name cause it works for you.

  5. The word “suffer” can be pretty subjective.

  6. If you consider not being able to hold onto a single thought for more than 90 seconds clever then I’ll agree with you, and thank you, Danny.

  7. I don’t think this small gathering rates as a rally. Looks like no one even has a sign.

  9. Quite the turnout at the rally. What was the rally all about…show up if you think Pawlenty is making bad decisions??

  10. There were about 30 people at the rally. True, it was small, but this shot certainly does not show everyone. Like I said, I was not there as any sort of professional journalist, so whatever I have here is not intended to give a big or balanced picture of everything that happened. The rally was to get information and action steps to protest the governor’s unallotment. Actually, OG, I think that if the rally were to have represented everyone in the city of Duluth who thought Pawlenty was making bad decisions (or maybe even good decisions) then the whole civic center would have been full. But not everyone who has an opinion always comes out, this is the nature of community organizing.

I wonder how big Chuck Horton’s upcoming civic center rally against Tony Cuneo and Sharla Gardner’s “corruption” will be? I bet it won’t attract everyone who has an opinion … but I bet it WILL attract more professional media attention than this one did. Just a guess.

  11. We have a civic center?

    Danny G | Jul 12, 2009 | New Comment
  12. The Duluth Civic Center is the body of government buildings on Fifth Avenue West and First Street:

    St. Louis County Courthouse
    Soldiers and Sailors Monument
    St. Louis County Jail
    Duluth City Hall
Federal Building/United States Courthouse and Custom House

The whole thing is a “historic district” on the National Register of Historic Places, which is why preservationists are upset about the old county clink potentially getting demolished.

  13. Alrighty. I guess I’ve just never heard it called the civic center before. Thanks.
