Carnival?

carnival

Does anyone have any information about the carnival down by Bayfront? Specifically, times & cost? I can’t find anything anywhere about it…

  1. It’s the Mighty Thomas Carnival. I think you can wander around the carnival for free, but armbands for rides are $22. There’s a coupon for $3 off here.

  2. I think my kid is going to want to go, so thanks for the coupons Paul. One year we went on Pharoah’s Revenge. OMG. I was sick for days afterwards.

  3. As a ride addict, I am looking forward to the greasy Thomas Shows. Do they have one of their deliciously great dark rides this year?

  4. Tamara, the secret is you get as much money out of the atm as you can and then plan on spending it all. But it the ‘Zra is gonna go texan and try to beat the carnies at their games then you’re gonna need some extra money. He will, I’m sure, eventually figure out the trick though and you should have some nice stuffed animals and cotton candy to show for it.

Look for me, I’ll be the sunburned giant, pushing a stroller with the fluorescent arm band and a pained look on my face counting the years until all of my kids are old enough to ride with their friends, not me.

But it’s one of the great traditions of Duluth when the fair is in town, that and trying to keep the semi-homeless kids who normally hang out at the Holiday Center from introducing too many new std’s into the Twin Ports network.

  5. Another addition to the above amazing statements is that if “The Thomas Shows” are in town it typically rains!

This year has been pretty much an amazing turn of events.

    peace

  6. The Mighty Thomas Show is responsible for the cold, rainy, and generally crappy weather we have been having all week. Could not the bastards either stay the hell away or come the weekend of Grandma’s?

  7. Wandered trhough it yesterday. $4/ride seemed to be standard fare for rides if you don’t have any armbands. However, you can feed a donkey for five nickles.

  8. That is one sad little carnival. Seemingly fixated on the Middle East. Apparently a requirement to be smoking on the job. Not one worker we saw last night wasn’t. And that pony ride, saddest of all. I like the sign that says “no pictures” because the ride host needs to make money by selling his own. Yet he didn’t take any pics of the kids who were on the ride. Of course, someone needs to remind him that he’s on public property. (Will someone defy this rule for me?)If it does rain, be warned, the entire carnival will turn to mud, it’s on the dirt lot this year. Maybe because it was twilight and just a smattering of people were there, but the place was positively creeptown. And I dig these things for that reason, but it had some other kind of creeptown vibe. Go with the thought that this is a dying cultural phenomenon and maybe your sociological mask will make it interesting. Or go deep into the evening and let the pretty lights mesmerize you.

  9. I was kicking myself yesterday for being so cynical and sarcastic in my response yesterday, but spy1 has topped that -- in an Alan Moore “Watchmen” sort of way.

It is a fun thing to do with your kids, or your friends’ kids, just keep ‘em really close.

  10. I am the mom that tells her kids that the Thomas Shows eat children. That way they wait for the Head of the Lakes Fair when I can have social services visit me in the beer tent! Awww, tradition.

  11. We went — two adults, 2 kids. We used the coupons for the rides, the kids got their money’s worth. We were there for an hour — which is about all I can stomach. Cheesy. Spy1 totally nailed it — middle of the day, it’s still creepsville.

  12. The cheesiness is half the fun. The Mighty Thomas Carnival is the ultimate in pop art.

  13. The carneys are just not that creepy anymore. Someone pointed out it’s probably primarily staffed with dot com CEOs, which would explain the new creepiness.

WTF ever happened to Captain Ridemore?
