John Peyton – Duluth’s Great American Outdoor Artist »

John Peyton was arguably the most versatile artist of his time. He created well over 700 masterful artworks ranging from landscapes, wildlife, nudes, to stills. His works are now grabbing the imagination and awe of viewers in galleries throughout Minnesota. John captured both the spirit and theme of each scene through skillfully blended colors and imagery. Rolling Ruts – Inexpensive Golf Just Outside Duluth »

RollingsRuts4783562

If you aren’t particularly good at, or enthusiastic about, golf it’s hard to justify paying about $17 for nine holes, plus another $9 to rent clubs (especially if you’re paying for the whole family.)

Rolling Ruts offers the answer to casual golfers’ prayers. It’s basically free.

Solution for Iron Range economy »

I’m no expert, but I came across this and I would guess that $20/gallon taconite pellets would turn the Iron Range economy around in a hurry?  I haven’t done the math but I’m pretty sure this deal looks like a winner!

Factuals »

Just saw this band at the thirsty pagan. Brought me back to when I grew up. Cover tunes, but are they something you can’t do. Great guitars. People carried tables out for dancing great guitar work, both from Barry and Jim. you could wish you could play so good. Hot rod you would like them.

Molly (Okash) Spaun, owner of Molly’s Bar on Tower Avenue in Superior »

Has anyone else had the pleasure of speaking to Molly Spaun about prohibition and prostitution in Superior during the 1920s and ’30s? I did, but my memory is clouded. She tells stories of speakeasies and debauchery. It was a lawless time and fascinating history about the Twin Ports.

Fun workout helping out: Sat 6/27 »

Hi

We need a few volunteers on our next food distribution day for our 100% volunteer-run non-profit food buying club. The semi will come to the Mariner Mall in Superior over by the theatres  on Saturday June 27 at 8:30 AM. It takes about 45 min to unload the pallets and bring them into the storefront we use that day.  The produce assortment  is then pre-packed into recycled plastic grocery bags for distribution that afternoon.  All said, it would be 2 hours of service. Other volunteers, many who are seniors and cannot lift boxes of food,  come in around 10:30 to prepare orders to be delivered to senior apt buildings and other homebound people, as well as 300 other households who come to the Mall to pick up their order.  SHARE is open to everyone– no age or income requirements. Anyone interested in helping??

Organics »

I wish to educate Duluthians on the importance of eating organic and would like to show people who are already eating organic a great resource that can help give you more of a selection of USDA certified organic foods because as you know (or should know) all (so called) ORGANICS  are not created equal. Would anyone be interested in a meeting in Duluth on organics and a  free organic food tasting? If I get enough people interested I will find a place to hold it or if you would like to host it in your home you can get some organic food free! Please let me know if you just want more info. Thanks, Vicki

Father’s Day »

animal dads

Some father’s day notes …

I read this great book (above) to my daughter at the dentist’s office yesterday. Working with fathers for my “real” job, I notice these things like how medical offices are decorated and set up, many are very friendly to mothers (great), but some are a little daunting for dads (too bad). It’s wonderful that in addition to providing great quality and accessible health care, the Lake Superior Community Health Center also makes an extra little effort like this to make dads feel comfortable and welcome at their kids’ appointments.

I read a lot of books for kids and adults about dads, this book was really great I had never seen it before. I think it would make a good father’s day gift for a dad of school age kids, or one who appreciates crafty art like Steve Jenkins’ paper cut images in the book ….

Did Marilyn Manson rip off Bone Appetit? »

Champions

People are speculating that “Running to the End of the World,” a song off Marilyn Manson’s latest album “The High End of Low,” bears an uncanny resemblance to our beloved hometown heroes’ seminal ballad, “Drive Away.” Stick with this story: Controversy (and hilarity) are bound to ensue.

Park Point tunnels? »

I don’t know if this has been addressed here before because I just discovered the site. I’ve heard the urban legend about a tunnel under Park Point that was used during prohibition to smuggle Canadian spirits into the Twin Ports, avoiding the usual protocol involved in bringing them in through the Superior or Duluth entries. Does anyone know if there is any truth to this?

My proposal: Superior-to-Skyline Run »

It’s Grandma’s Marathon week, so runners will be flooding into town for the long, rolling race along the shore of Lake Superior. It’s an iconic setting and an iconic race.

I’ve wondered a few times since moving here, though, if there should be another iconic running race in Duluth, one that celebrates another facet of Duluth like Grandma’s celebrates the lake. My proposal: A run from the shore of Lake Superior to the top of the hill. Call it the “Superior-to-Skyline Run.” Short, simple and steep. Let’s start crowning Duluth’s Kings (and Queens) of the Hill.

Free Chamber Music Concert »

Sacred Heart Music Center will play host to part of the Three Bridges International Chamber Music Festival with a free concert on Tuesday June 16 at 7:30 pm.

I have had the pleasure of recording all of the concerts during this festival and have been very impressed by the quality of the participants. Some world class players are involved and hearing them play in the acoustical space of Sacred Heart should be a treat. Even if you aren’t normally a classical music fan you owe it to yourself to check out this show.

Who, what, when, where, why and Howard »

howardmill

I have some questions about various “Howards” in the Duluth area, and I’m hoping someone on PDD can provide the answers:

1. What is/was the “Old Howard Mill” referred to in Old Howard Mill Road?

2. Why does Old Howard Mill Road have two parts so far apart (see Google map excerpt above)? One segment is north of Glenwood Street, and the other is across the Northland Country Club and a bit farther, in what would be… the Congdon neighborhood? Hunters Park? Not quite sure. In any case, why the gap? They don’t even seem to line up.

3. Howard Gnesen Road: It goes up to Gnesen Township, so that half makes sense (Gnesen Township was named for a city in Poland, by the way). But what does the Howard refer to? Is there a connection to the Old Howard Mill?

I think that exhausts my Howard question file. Can anyone out there provide some info?

You Gotta Go »

It’s quilters vs. poets in the ultimate face-off in Duluth. This weekend, see the po-po-poetry take on the stitch-stitch-stitchers in what promises to be a fight to the death. Watch as quilting bees are disrupted with spoken word jams with gangs from each side rumbling over the merits of hands-on artistry vs. word assembly. It’s tactile vs. fragile. Quilts against quatrains.

It all starts Thursday when the heavyweights of QuiltCon and PoCon square off. Beatrice Ludden takes on Rainbow Star. Val Struthers takes her needle against Will Strom’s pen.

It all leads to the ultimate showdown Saturday night when the machines take center stage for an inhumane stand-off: Stitcher 2000 vs. Thesaurus Rex. Be there as lines and threads are crossed with any means necessary to come out on top.

It’s all at the DECC, and in the alleys after dark. Take a stitch in rhyme and see this mixed arts extravaganza melee. Limited engagement, only in Duluth.

Rebooting without Consent »

sillymicro-450x337

Umm, yeah…

Windows Vista decided to reboot my system without my consent mid-game (Yes I’m a late night gamer geek).  So let’s look at this for a second.  What if I were running a 2 hour crunching program, or working on an important spreadsheet?  No terrible offense, MS, but your promises are half-assed.

BTW, do you have those TPS reports done?
