  1. Two Harbors has a community band that plays in the summer. Or, they used to anyway. I don’t know who organizes it.

  3. There is a marching band from West Duluth called The Legion Post 71 Drum and Bugle Corp.

My wife and I play in the group.

Not only do we need more people but it is the last surviving Drum and Bugle Corp in the state!!!!!

We play at Spirit Vally days and Cloquet as well as North Branch Summer Fest. We also play at Veterans Day and other Military events to help us not only remember fallen Americans but also to remember that war kills people and is not a list of numbers.

  5. Duluth DOES have a community band. You cna get to them trough Kiwanis who I think may help underwrite them. Also try Duluth Parks and Rec. They have a list of buskers in fact they do “auditions” for buskers which is a story all in itself. Or is that a “joke” all in itself? Getting a permit to play music for free (and collect a percentage) seems more like a control mechanism than an audition, but that’s what they call it.

Also, there are many unofficial buskers who surface around the lakewalk and are find-able if you want to. Try Ken (I think that’s his name) at the Duluth Shipping News, he knows many of them and where and how to find them). One of these unnoficial guys who really sticks out is this guy who actually plugs in and plays solo blues electric guitar in Leif Ericson park a few times a week. This is probably the part where I should say that it’s really cool, but I won’t. He’s a fine guitar player and all, but solo blues guitar with no vocals or anything get’s really annoying after about 20 minutes, and sometimes he’s there for ours and hours. He never seems to get any donations, either. But … IMHO most of the buskers are actually really good and add a cool, creative element to the lakewalk experience.

Also, there are various church and community groups who do outdoor summer music/dance/drama in Leif Ericson throughout the summer. Also, Trent Edgerton from Movies in the Park has live musicians perform before about a third of the movies each summer. The bands are almost all basically s called unknowns who get that one shot to make a big impression in front of a thousand or so people who are jostling around for popcorn, and a good spot and (if I’m lucky) a wienie or two, too.

One more thing, I coordinated the Lake Place Park summer concert series one summer and it was a nightmare. Not the music, just that summer. So … there’s some thoughts from a reform(ing) outdoor food vendor.

  8. Ok, I signed up for a community ed orchestra. The Duluth Community Ed site (listed in this week’s Budgeteer also. It is the least faded newspaper in a plastic bag on your porch).

(music page. Ladies, check out the Women’s Choir. I heard it is quite fun.)

  9. The Duluth Community Band/Duluth Symphonic Winds practices every Monday during the winter at Ordean Middle School at 7 and then switches for the summer to practices at 6:30 at Central. Anybody who still likes to play is welcome, and there’s a concert next Monday, March 23rd at Denfeld at 7:30.

  10. Thanks for the shout-out for the women’s chorus, mevdev. New singers are always welcome.

Community Ed is one of those hidden gems of Duluth, lots of great things a low prices and easy to get into if you want to teach something.
