The Duluth Eskimos: the team that saved the NFL!

Leatherheads.jpg

Hey, PDDers:

Just wanted to let the Duluth History Fans and Local Sports Fans (few though they may be) on the blog know about X-comm's latest book:

Leatherheads of the North: the True Story of Ernie Nevers and the Duluth Eskimos

We also have have (or will by Friday) Starfire-produced long- and short-sleeved t-shirts featuring a nifty Eskimos throw-back logo as well:

If you want a signed copy of the book (think Holiday gift...), there's a whole list of signings and a bunch of other info on the book at http://www.x-communication.org/xcomm/books/leatherheads.html.

Thanks for letting me use PDD for the shameless promotion of commercial products.

Tony D.

p.s.
We even made a commercial--push play to check it out.

Good job getting that out there before Clooney gets his movie done.

Once scored 40 points in a single game. That's 6 touchdowns and 4 EP.

Actually, my side on trophymaster is named after this team.

Thanks, Guys! N Jr., we have a full description of Nevers' 40-point game in the book (although he--and ten other former Eskimos--were playing for the Chicago Cardinals that day...).

Yeah, we hurried to get the book out in November because the movie ("Leatherheads" starring George Clooney, Renee Zellweger, and Jon "Jim on 'The Office'" Kraskinski, based on the 1926 -27 Eskimos--called the "Duluth Bulldogs" in the film) was set to release Dec, 7. We had just set up an event at the Lakes 110 for "opening night" when Clooney announced he's delaying the release until April 4, 2008.

Duluth Bulldogs... I like it. Nice of them to use an actual local team name even though they couldn't use the actual one (I presume the movie is too fictionalized for that.)

Ummm, Office Jim...

Tony, You ARE shameless! (But it's just another word for marketing...)

My father, Oke Hultkrantz, graduated from Duluth Central in 1928 (All-City Guard), played for the Duluth Junior College (Cardinals) and the for the later version of the Eskimos. Was going to play for Bernie Bierman at the U but his Eskimo days made him inelgible. Thanks for highlighting a very bright spot for Duluth in football history,

When Max Winter wanted to start a pro team in Minneapolis he first had to buy the only existing MN franchise, the Duluth Eskimos... it's the pre-cursor of the Minnesota Vikings.

I really think that the duluth superior shoremen should change their name to the eskimos, since it is a different league and all, what does anyone else think of that?

My grandfather Edwin Bratt and his brother Bob played for the Eskimos "back in the day" -- my father was born in 1920 and remembered that. My father also played for Duluth Central HS -- the smallest guy on the team. They were a tough group of guys!

Hey how do I get my hands on a T-Shirt?

Actually the reason for them changing the name from the Eskimos to the Bulldogs is because the NFL would not allow them ti use the Eskimo name because the movie shows scenes of men drinking. ...apparently current NFL players dont drink and the hundreds of beer commercials during the games are completely irrelevant...
